The Panch Kedar refers to five places of the Shaivite or the five Hindu Holy Temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. These temples are in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand in the valleys between the rivers Bhagirathi and Alaknanda. The Panch Kedar has 5 temples of Lord Shiva namely Kedarnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar, Kalpeshwar and Tungnath.

The Legend of Panch Kedar-

Panch Kedar has an interesting legend. When the Pandavas went to the Himalayas, Shiva avoided them because they had killed so many people in the war. To avoid them he ran in the form of a Bull and Bhima chased him. On being followed, the colossal Bull dived into the ground to resurface at other places. He left his hump at Kedarnath. But when he resurfaced, it seems that he had assumed human form and emerged at different areas in these mountains. His face resurfaced at Rudranath. His Arms resurfaced at Tungnath. His navel emerged at Madhyamaheshwar. His hair emerged at Kalpeshwar.

The five shrines of Panch Kedar-

Kedarnath (3,583 m/ 11,755 ft): The temple of Kedarnath is not directly accessible by road and has to be reached by a 18 km uphill trek from Gaurikund. The temple is believed to have been built by Adi Sankaracharya and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas.

Tungnath (3,680 m/ 12,144 ft): Tungnath is the place where the arm of the Shiva appeared and is the highest temple in Garhwal. This is the place where at the height of 500 m Chandrashila is located that brings the most panoramic view of the Himalayas.
Rudranath (2,286 m/ 7,544 ft): Rudranath is the place where the face of Shiva is said to have appeared. It is strongly believed that in the morning time Lord Shiva face looks like a small child, in the afternoon the face of lord Shiva looks like a young man but in the evening time the face of lord Shiva looks like a old man. To reach Rudranath, one must trek through alpine meadows and dense forests.

Madhyamaheshwar (3,289m/ 10,854ft): Located at base of Chaukhamba peak. Shiva is worshipped at Madhyamaheshwar in the form of navel-shaped lingum that resembles the hump of a bull. So sanctified is the water here that even a few drops are considered enough for absolution.

Kalpeshwar: The Kalpeshwar temple is situated in the beautiful valley of Urgam, here Shiva is worshipped in his matted Jata. A favorite spots for sages who come here to meditate.
