Chadar Trek-

The Frozen River Trek, commonly known as the Chadar Trek, is one of the challenging treks in the Ladakh region. The strenuous trail on the ice-clogged river that passes through valleys, mountain caves and frozen waterfalls. It is one of the most arduous treks of Indian Himalaya as the trekkers will pass through craggy rocks over the river bed and the temperature may dip to below minus 40 degrees. Like a walk to paradise, the Chadar Trek swipes several trekker’s dream making it a part of their diary. The journey leads off from Ladakh to the snowbound villages of the Zanskar Valley.

The Chadar is a lifeline to Zanskari people which connects them to the outside world and in fact the Ladakh region and its people.

Trek Info:

Difficulty:    Moderate. Walking over the frozen river bed and temp. is always in minus.
Trail Type:    Easy gradient. It is almost a flat walk on the frozen river.
Altitude:      Highest altitude 10,900 feet (Nerak)
Temperature:   Between -5° to -10°C during the day. Can drop to -40°C during the night.

 

Itinerary-

9 nights / 10 days

Day 1 (12th Jan): Fly to Leh & Report to hotel/ Guest house

Arrive at Leh “K B Rinpoche” Airport (world’s highest airfield) and transfer to hotel. Rest of the day free for acclimatization to avoid High Altitude Sickness (HAS).

Overnight stay at the Guest house/Hotel.

Day 2 (13th Jan): Local sightseeing in morning & filling of “Tourist Chadar Medical examination form” at SNM hospital, Leh. in the afternoon

After breakfast, visit to Ladakh’s richest and Famous architectural sites and a guided heritage walk in old town to explore Ladakhi architecture, culture and traditions. Visit Leh Tsas soma Mosque, the oldest Mosque built in 15th century during the silk route of central Asia; Leh Jamia Masjid; Leh Palace; Shanti Stupa.

Post Lunch proceed towards Sonam Memorial Hospital, Leh for Medical checkup.

Overnight stay at the Guest house/Hotel.

Day 3 (14th Jan): Local sightseeing and collect Medical Fitness Certificate from SNM Hospital.

After breakfast move for sightseeing, visit Hall of Fame; Hemis Monastery; Thiksey Monastery; Shey Palace & Gompa.

While coming back collect Medical Fitness Certificate from Leh hospital.

Overnight stay at the Guest house/Hotel.

Day 4 (15th Jan): The trek on the Chadar starts from today. Drive to Chilling Village to Tilad Do.

Start early in the morning from the guest house /hotel for Chilling. The drive takes along the Indus River and the confluence of Indus and Zanskar River at Nimoo village, till Tilad Do, the trekking point. The beauty of the Chadar treks starts from here. The most enjoyable and scenic trek passing through some magnificent beautiful waterfalls and ice cliffs will give you a heavenly experience. Enjoy the thrill and practice the walk over the frozen river. Enjoy the huge peaks all around you with hot cup of coffee/herbal tea. ….

Day 5 (16th Jan) Trek Day 1: Trek from Tilad Do to Gyalpo (5-6 hrs trek).

Post breakfast start trek to Gyalpo by 8:00am. Enjoy the walk over full-fledged frozen river and you might hear different sounds of Chadar forming and breaking.

Day 6 (17th Jan) Trek Day 2: Gyalpo to Tibb Cave (5-6 hrs trek).

The beauty of the Chadar treks starts from here. The most enjoyable and scenic trek passing through some magnificent beautiful waterfalls and ice cliffs give a heavenly experience. The walk also crosses through narrow gorges, where the trekker may have to climb on the Rocky River bank. The sharp bends and current of the river breaks the ice in some places. You will also find number of small and big caves in the mountains which were mostly used by Zanskari people to get shelter and keep warm during the nights.

Day 7 (18th Jan) Trek Day 3: From Tibb Cave to Neyrak Pullu.

Again, one of the beautiful trek over the Chadar. It gives you a chance to test your trekking skills if the Chadar is not very firm. The vistas are stunning though as we pass through giant frozen waterfalls, ice cliffs. Walking through the valley and crossing the George you will find a variety of shrubs and herbs on the cliffs; the herbs is of medicinal value used by the local Amchi (traditional local doctor) to heal different ailments.

Day 8 (19th Jan) Trek day 4: Neyrak to Tibb caves

Technically our return journey starts today. Though it is the same way back, it is quite different, as the Chadar is always changing, breaking up and forming itself again. The same route and place would look and feel differently as the texture and conditions change.

Day 9 (20th Jan) Trek Day 5: Tibb caves to Gyalpo to Leh

This will be the last day over Chadar and you will get a last chance to click the beautiful terrain that you might have missed during the beginning of trek.

Day 10 (21st Jan): Drop to Leh KBR airport

Checkout of Hotel & drive to Leh airport for flight back to home with sweet memories.

The above plan is based on an “Ideal” scenario where everything goes per plan & considering that there is no breakdown. It is subject to change in Real Time based on ground realities.

 

Event Cost-

  • Hotel accommodation at Leh for 4 nights on AP basis (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included)
  • Pickup & Drop from Leh airport to hotel
  • Surface Transfers from Leh Hotel to Base Camp and Back to Hotel

  • Air travel to and from Leh
  • Personal / Accident insurance.
  • Porter’s service to carry your personal luggage on the trek.
  • Bottled water, Cold drinks, Room services, Laundry service at the hotel
  • Additional costs for Hotel accommodation, transport services due to flight cancellation, or any other issues.
  • Additional accommodation and food expenses if trek gets delayed due to weather, health or any other reason.
  • Expenses for evacuation and rescue operations due to natural calamity, mishaps, injury or any health problem.
  • Wildlife Fees, Environmental Fees and other fees that are being put forward by LAHDC and ALTOA organization.
  • Any other items which is specifically not mentioned in the above INCLUSIONS.

Cancellation policy-

Standard administrative charge of 10% of the cost of the trip

From date of departure:

  • Up to 60 days: 25% of the Trip Cost
  • Between 60 – 45 days: 50% of the Trip Cost
  • Between 44 – 30 days: 75% of the Trip Cost
  • Less than 30 days: 100% of the Trip Cost

 
Note: Due to natural calamities or poor ice layer formation (Chadar) on the Zanskar River, no refund will be made, but Nisarga Bhraman will organize a substitute tour around Leh.

 

Rules & Regulations-
  • Consumption of alcohol, Drugs, Narcotics is strictly banned on the event & should lead to expulsion from the trek.
  • The leader’s decision will be final and binding on all members. No arguments will be entertained.
  • Each member will be responsible for his/her own safety and baggage.
  • Please do not wear any jewelry or gold chains/rings.
  • Please do not litter, we believe in the saying, “Wherever you go, leave only your footprints and take back only memories.”

Medical Disclaimer:

It is Important to be physically fit while on treks. If suffering from any allergy or ailment, please bring prescribed medicines to prevent serious health problem including heatstroke, sever headache, cough, dehydration and hypothermia. Participants suffering from chronic conditions like asthma bronchitis, blood pressure, migraine, diabetes etc should take permission from their physicians before treks.

  • Keep all pollutants away from the river, streams and other water sources.
  • Do not urinate or defecate near water sources or camping ground.
  • Ladakh is rich in monasteries, other religious and historical sites, keeping in view the sanctity, abide by the guidelines and follow the instruction set by the local authorities.
  • Do not interfere, interrupt or disturb the locals you encounter during the trek, respect the privacy of the host; always seek permission before taking their pictures.
  • Do not carry any sort of drugs or alcohol, refrain from these activities.
  • Take happy memories and leave nothing but your footprints.
